a common cause of loneliness…

one of the most painful kind of emotion is loneliness.  it is an awful feeling.  and in 2 timothy 4 we have an example of paul and how he overcame loneliness.

now paul was at the end of his life.  2 timothy is the last book paul ever wrote.  so chapter 4 are the last words that paul ever wrote.  he was an old man, in prison in rome and he was waiting to be executed by nero.  all of his friends had left him and paul was a very lonely man.

in this story, we see some common causes of loneliness.  a lot of times we bring loneliness upon ourselves.  but it's the uncontrollable kind that we’re going to look at here on the front porch.

now we find that transitions in life is a common cause of lonelines.  passages.  they are the changes in life that we go through.  the fact is, life is a series of transitions.  we’re born.  we grow up.  we go to school.  we graduate.  we get jobs.  we change jobs.  we retire.  we die. life is a series of changes.  every time you make a change in life there is a tendency to feel loneliness.  any major change can cause loneliness.

now paul here is an old man.  he’s faced with the inevitable.  he’s about ready to die.  in chapter 4.6 (niv) he says, for i am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near..  i’ve fought the good fight, i’ve finished the race, i’ve kept the faith.   he says, i know my time is short.  the end is near.  nero is going to execute me.  i’m going through a transition.

why is it we often leave people who are dying alone?  people who live in rest homes.  they’ve done studies that the loneliest people in the world are elderly men who are sick.  they’re alone. transitions in life can be a lonely time.

transitions cause us to be lonely when we go through changes.

one of the greatest causes of stress in any life…

now we just talked here on the front porch about a few of GOD’s names.  there are hundreds in the bible.  every one of those names tells us how GOD can meet one of the deepest needs in our life.  and the point is this: all of your basic needs, all of your deepest needs are met in trusting who GOD is.

and this is so vital and so important for the stress level in every one of our lives.

one of the greatest causes of stress in any life is looking to the wrong place to have your needs met.  it creates incredible stress.

when you ask anything to carry a weight that it’s not designed to carry them there is great stress!

let’s say you’re going on a backpacking trip with bunch of kids.  and a sixty-pound kid shows up with a forty-pound pack thinking he is going on this backpacking trip.  now let’s say to his credit he is able to get the thing on.  but every time he tries to take a step forward he falls backwards, right on his back on the backpack.  he has too much weight.  he can’t carry it.

now let me tell you why there’s some stress in some of our lives.  there is stress in your life because you’re asking other people to meet needs that only GOD can meet.  and because of that there’s incredible stress in your relationship.

your marriage may be under stress because you are asking your husband, your wife, to meet needs that only GOD can meet.  you may be under stress with your kids because you’re asking them to meet needs that only GOD can meet.  with a friend.

you may be under stress with your parents because you’re asking them to meet a need that only GOD can meet.  you cannot expect an imperfect person to perfectly meet all of your needs.  it’s impossible.

there are some needs in all of our lives that only GOD can meet.  that is why HE is GOD.  that is why HE can meet those needs.

some common temptations...

charles spurgeon said about temptation:  “learn to say no.  it would be of more use to you than being able to read latin.”  that’s the truth.  who cares about latin?  one word.  “no!”  only GOD can empower that “no” in our lives through HIS SPIRIT within us, through HIS word.  HE can empower that.  joseph teaches us a few simple tips on how.

discipleship journal did a little survey on temptation.  the top nine temptations in this survey that believers face:
9.  lying,
8.  gluttony,
7.  envy,
6&5.  tie between anger and bitterness and sexual lust
4.  laziness
3.  self-centeredness
2.  pride
1.  materialism

and if you look at that and think, “i haven’t faced any of those temptations in my life,” take another look at  “pride”.

the bible tells us in 1 corinthians 10 that every temptation that we face is common to every one of us.  if you’ve got a temptation i’ve probably faced it too.  maybe not in the same form, maybe not in the same way but we all have the same common temptations.  don’t think that you’re strange or weird because you’re tempted to do the wrong thing.  we’re all tempted.  but praise GOD!  HE’s given us strategies in HIS word and HIS SPIRIT within us to help us to overcome those temptations that especially we face during those times when we’re waiting on a dream.

in the survey they said what brought about the temptation.

81% said they were most tempted when they neglected time with the LORD.
57% said they were most tempted when they were tired.

in, out of, or headed into trouble…

everybody has difficulty in life.  JESUS told us this would happen in john 16.33 (niv), in this world you will have trouble.  but take heart! I have overcome the world.

either you have just gotten out of trouble, or you’re in it right now, or you’re headed into it.  trouble is a part of life.  you will have difficulties.

few people faced the difficulties though that paul did in life.  yet he never gave up on his dream.  2 corinthians 6.4 (tev), in everything we do we show that we are GOD's servants, by patiently enduring troubles, hardships and difficulties.

you show what kind of CHRISTian you are by the way you respond to problems.  your testimony of how emotionally mature and how spiritually mature you are is evidenced by your reaction to difficulty.  if you cop out, complain, gripe, run from difficulty, you're not a very mature person either spiritually or emotionally.  but if you learn from difficulty you just keep growing and growing.

in acts 27 there is one of the stories of the many difficulties in paul’s life.  he was being taken as a prisoner to rome and he warned the captain, “don't sail out of this harbor, because GOD has told me there’s going to be a storm.”  but they got impatient.  and any time you get impatient you’re going to head right into a storm.

so they decided to leave anyway and they sailed into a storm which inevitably caused them to shipwreck.  some of you have had an emotional shipwreck.  you have lost all of your energy.  some of you have had a relational shipwreck and a relationship that you thought was solid fell apart.  some of you have had a financial shipwreck or a career shipwreck or a health shipwreck.  what do you do when you face those difficulties in life?

strart by asking the question, “what caused this?” and there are only four different causes for difficulty in your life.

1.  i cause a lot of difficulty in my life.  most of your problems you bring on yourself.  i’m the first and greatest cause.
2.  other people
3.  the devil
4.  GOD can be a cause of difficulty in your life.  HE allows problems to come into our lives to get our attention, test us, mold us, many different reasons.

why me, GOD?…

joseph is an example of how you handle it when people hurt you intentionally. joseph was his father's favorite son. all of his brothers got very jealous. they decided to sell their brother into slavery. they told their father he had been killed by a beast. they sell him into slavery and he's taken to egypt. he's sold as a slave in a man's house. the man's wife tries to seduce him. he won't give in so he's accused of rape. he's put in prison and he spends years in prison, dwindling away. i'm sure he was saying, “where is GOD in all of this? what did i do to deserve this?”

if i were joseph i'd be saying, “why me, GOD?” but he was exactly where GOD wanted him to be. GOD was in control and GOD was working through circumstances and situations. HE didn't cause it but HE allowed the brothers to sell him in to slavery. later on, joseph rose to a position of prominence in egypt and there was a great famine. because of his wisdom both egypt and israel were saved. later he came face to face with the very brothers that tried to hurt him.

genesis 50.20 (niv), one of the greatest verses in the bible. joseph says to his brothers, you intended to harm me, but GOD intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

some of you are being hurt right now by bosses, brothers, sisters, employees, by other people. they mean it for bad but GOD means it for good. there are people who are out to destroy you or maybe they don't like you and are trying to get your job. they mean it for bad but GOD is in control and HE means it for good and HE's got a purpose behind every problem.

what is the key to my response then? look past the pain and try to find GOD's purpose behind the pain. some things in life we're never going to know. why do people die at a certain time? i don't know! we all die eventually. why now? i don't know! but GOD has a plan and GOD is a good GOD. HE's in control. look past the pain.

2 corinthians 4.16-17 (ph). this is the reason why we never lose heart... these little troubles (which are really so transitory) are winning for us a permanent, glorious, and solid reward out of all proportion to our pain.

GOD says the temporary problems you are going through right now are minor compared to the reward you're going to be given on the other side for how you handled them.

in the very next verse paul says, “we don't look at the temporary problems we're going through. we keep our eyes on the eternal things, the things that really count. the things that matter.” look past the pain.
