luke 1.26 (niv), GOD sent the angel gabriel to nazareth, a town in galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named joseph... the virgin's name was mary.
the CHRISTmas story brings up a lot of questions. and a lot of them revolve around mary, the mother of JESUS. mark lowry even wrote a song around a question, mary did you know? and she too must have had a lot of questions. and we too have questions.
have you ever asked the question, why mary? why did GOD choose her? was she a superstar on the israel scene who was so outstanding that if others would have had a hand in choosing who would be the mother of the SON of GOD no doubt she would have been their first choice? why did GOD choose mary over all the other women of that day?
well there are a lot of misconceptions about mary. not once in the bible does it say we're to worship her. not once does it say she was perfect or sinless. it does not say she was GOD. it doesn't say we're to venerate her. in fact, what is special about mary was her plain ordinariness. GOD took an ordinary woman and used her in an extraordinary way. that's what makes her special.
so why did GOD choose mary? it wasn't because of her education because she didn't have any. and it wasn't because of her wealth because she was poor. and it wasn't because she was mature because she was a teenager.
i think it is a good question to ask, why did GOD choose mary? luke 1.26-55
just a thought from the front porch…
