10 reasons why some don’t go to church/football games…

now i have heard as a pastor, folks, every excuse in the world why people can’t come to church.

now from those excuse about not coming to church, i found a list of excuses of why i am giving up sports.  ok?

football in the fall, basketball in winter, baseball in the spring and summer, i’ve had it all, i have quit attending sports once and for all and here are my ten excuses.

#1.  everytime i went they asked for money.
#2.  the people i sat next to didn’t seem friendly
#3.  the seats were too hard.  they weren’t comfortable at all.
#4.  i went to many games, but the coach never came to call on me.

one pastor had a woman ask him, “pastor, when are you going to come and see me?”  he said, “lady, you don’t want to be that sick.”

#5.  the referee’s made decisions that i didn’t agree with.
#6.  Here’s a good one.  the game went into overtime and i was late getting home.
#7.  the band played numbers that i had never heard before and it wasn’t my style of music.
#8.  it seems the games are always scheduled when i want to do other things.
#9.  i expect that i was sitting by some hypocrites.  they came to see their friends and they talked through the whole game.
#10.  i was taken to too many games by my parents when i was growing up.

now unfortunately, many CHRISTians are pros at making excuses so i wrote down some excuses from pastors and church leaders for resisting change.  things like, we’ve tried that before.  our church is different.  it costs too much.  it is impossible.  it wouldn’t work here.  we’ve never done it that way before.  and the best one, let’s form a committee.

now the fact is, excusers are losers.  excusers are losers.

just a thought from the front porch…

ALL the examples you gave were very good reasons why people don't want to go to church but there are some very serious issues within many churches that are not be dealt with. If you went behind the root of each point, it wouldn't sound so much as a stupid excuse.

Let me take point 6 for example: lateness
I use to go to church at 9am for morning service, followed by Sunday school service, followed by main church service. There was a time schedule but it NEVER went by this. After lunch (when the service could squeeze in a break) you had the evening service which started about 3pm ish and went on until 10pm, 11pm or later, as it never ran according to the right times.
I use to have to walk the dark streets of London because the public transport had at times stopped running as I didn't drive and no church person was going to go out of their way to give you a lift home.

There was a vast amount of pressure put on you to attend these services every Sunday ( more services in the week) and if you did not, there would be serious repercussions. A complaint from you would mean severe chastisement, sometimes from the pulpit such as
- informing the whole church how people would complain about spending time in the church, and it was implied you didn't want to spend time with God.
- preaching how people use to go out clubbing but when it came to God they were too afraid to stay out late and that God would protect you from any harm on the streets!
- others who disobeyed would be stripped of their ministerial titles until they conformed. When they conformed they were given their man-made titles back.

So that was just one example, and mark my words, I haven't even scratched the surface here. I will one day write a post about it all.

When I got out of the church, and have visited a few in my time, I wasn't too keen in going back to what I now recognise as a cult. I'm not against God in any way, shape or form BUT some excuses are extremley valid and important and if they could be put right, and it doesn't take a lot to change things, you just might see the church pews being sat upon.

thank you so much for your comment. there are right reasons to not go sometimes to church and also to not go to a specific church but GOD has shown us that there are great benefits to going. maybe changing churches would be better than not going at all.
