it’s as simple as abc…

breaking a persistent temptation in your life is simple but it’s not easy.  it’s as simple as abc – accountability, boundaries, CHRISTian friends.  you’ve got to have those three things in your life or you’re never going to get over it.  accountability – one person you’re authentic with and honest with.  boundaries – you set up some boundaries that keep you from being in situations where you would be tempted.

a few years back stef our daughter and her husband andrew were in la and they went on sunday to the church where brett and marissa, our son and daughter in law met.  andrew had never seen the pastor, erwin mcmanus but he had read a lot of his books.  well after the service they went up and met erwin and told him that stef was the sister of the guy who had gone to ireland with erwin two years back and he asked who that was and they said brett williams and he was excited about that.

now the reason why erwin wasn’t sure of who it was is because he travels all over the world speaking and one of his boundaries is that he never goes anywhere without another person going with him and at least one of his family members.  he set that boundary to protect himself from temptations when he is out away from home.

you say, but he’s a very GODly man, he wouldn’t do anything like that.  but the truth is given the right situation he is capable of anything.  and by the way, so are you.  if you don’t think you’re capable you are sadly mistaken.  “he who standeth take heed lest he fall.”  you’re setting yourself up for a fall by saying that could never happen to me.  you’re wrong.

the bible says in the book of jeremiah, the heart is deceitful and desperately wicked.  who can know it?

that means all of us have the amazing ability to fool ourselves to lie to ourselves.  you know who you lie to the most?  you.  and you tell yourself it’s ok.  it’s no big deal.  when it really is a big deal.

if a person says it’s no big deal, it’s already a big deal because it means they’ve lowered their standard.

i was also reminded of rick warren and some boundaries that he has set for his life.   rick is a very influential pastor and writer and he said, “when the purpose driven life became the bestselling book in the world it brought in millions and millions of dollars and i had to build boundaries in my life to prevent satan from getting a foothold of greed in my life.”

do you know what he did?  he stopped taking a salary from the church, he still drove the same old ford, he still lives in the house they’ve lived in for over fifteen years.  he said, “we didn’t spend the money on ourselves.  in fact we give away ninety percent and live on ten.”

why did he do that?  he said, “because i don’t want to see how close to the edge i can get and not fall off.  it’s how far away from the edge can i get so it’s safe.  because too much is at stake – the lives of thousands and millions of people.  i’d rather die, stick a knife in my heart than shame the name of JESUS CHRIST.

listen he built boundaries in his life.  you build boundaries in your life.

forgiveness and accountability…

some of you are thinking, “i don’t want to do that!”  there’s the real issue!  sometimes we just don’t want to forgive.  we don’t want to let go.  but the truth is that GOD has forgiven us so much, how can we hold unforgiveness in our hearts towards anyone else when you start to look at what HE’s forgiven us for.

i understand the feeling full well of “i don’t want to forgive.  they don’t deserve to be forgiven”, but when i say for you to forgive them, i’m not saying for you to release them of all accountability for their wrong actions.  that’s not what forgiveness is about.

forgiveness is not releasing them from accountability.  forgiveness is saying, “i'm not the one to hold them accountable.  GOD is.”  forgiveness isn’t saying, “i’m not going to act in a different way towards someone because of what they did to me.”

if you had a business deal with someone and they stole a million dollars from you and you forgive them and they say, “let’s have another business deal,” i’d say forgiveness does not say you have another business deal with them.  that’s not forgiveness.  that’s stupidity.  forgiveness is saying, “i don’t hold you accountable.  i put that in GOD’s hands because HE’s the one who understands it all anyway.”

we’re too small to hold the big issues of unforgiveness in our hearts.

some life principles…

JESUS told the story in matthew 25 – the story of the talents.  and in it JESUS gives seven life principles.

ownership.  everything i have belongs to GOD.  verse 14 (niv), again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.

allocation.  GOD has given me some talents.  the word “talent” comes from this story.  verse 15 (niv),  to one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability.  it used to be the word “talent” simply meant money. it was about $1,000.

the bible tells this story of the master who goes away and he says, “i'm going to give my servants some money to take care of.”  he gives one guy 5 grand, another 2 grand, another 1 grand.

we’re all given different amounts.  we all have talents.  we all have different talents.  everybody gets something but nobody gets the same thing and the amounts are different.

the point is there are no non-talent people.  a talent is anything that GOD has entrusted with you.  ability, strength, skills, physical health, family, children, opportunities, business situations, brains, personality, the fact that most of you were born in a free country – these are talents that GOD has given us.

romans 12.6 (niv), we have different gifts, according to the grace given us.  you didn’t deserve it.  GOD just gave it to you.

accountability.  GOD expects me to use my talents.  HE’s made an investment in my life and HE expects a return on it.  HE wants me to make the most of whatever I’ve been given.

verse 19 (niv), after a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts.

this is a story that’s a parallel to the fact that one day, we’re going to give an account to GOD for our life.  one day GOD is going to do an audit on your life.  that’s one audit you’re not going to miss.  HE’s going to ask you this question.  “what did you do with what you were given?”  you need to be prepared to answer that.
