but i’m afraid…

the bible tells us that there is a rhythm to life, there is time and purpose for everything, a time to work and a time to rest; a time to strive, a time to have fun.  if you have no fun in your life you’re going to burn out.  if you have no rest in your life you’re going to burn out.  if you have nothing but constant work from morning till night and you’re a workaholic you’re going to lose your passion very, very quickly.

so what motivates people to work to the detriment of their own health, to the detriment of their relationships?  to be so overworked?

one reason is insecurity.  insecurity causes people to overwork.

i don’t know if you know this or not but almost all of the high achievers in life are very insecure people.  they’re not comfortable in their own skin.  they don’t accept themselves.  they’re always competitive, always trying to one-up.  why?  because they don’t really accept themselves.  they’re trying to compensate: i will show the world that i am ok, that i’m a person of value.

insecure people tend to strive extra hard and it is their insecurity, their worries, their fears that are actually motivating the overwork.  the bible says in psalm 127.2 (tlb), it is senseless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night fearing you’ll starve to death for GOD wants HIS loved ones to get their proper rest.

notice the word, fearing.  that’s the fear.

now, none of you are worried about starving to death.  that’s not a problem in la county.  but there may be other fears that are driving your workaholism.  a fear of not being important.  a fear of failure.  a fear of insignificance.

there may be a lot of other fears and worries and anxieties and insecurities that are driving you.  and when you get driven by insecurity you lose your passion, you lose your passion for life.  then you’re motivated by the negative rather than the positive.

just a thought from the front porch…
