being honest about how you feel…
in 2 chronicles 20.12 (nlt), king jehoshaphat says to GOD in his prayer, we are powerless against this mighty army that is about to attack us.
have you ever felt that way? have you ever felt powerless, like there was a problem in your marriage, your career, or somewhere in your life that you thought was overwhelming? there’s no way to succeed in this. you start the beginning of the week thinking maybe you can handle it but about wednesday you’re out of power. and by friday you’re thinking, “i don’t know if i can face another week of this.”
maybe you've felt like this poem:
the world had a hopeful beginning
but man spoiled it all by sinning
we trust that the story
will end in GOD’s glory
but right now the other side’s winning.
have you ever felt like that? you pick up the newspaper and it looks like the bad guys are winning. so you say, “GOD, we’re powerless and we don’t know what to do.” so you tell GOD exactly how you feel.
it’s interesting when you compare verse 12 where he says, we’re powerless, to verse 6 where he says, YOU have all the power in the world. it doesn’t matter if i’m powerless if GOD has power. if i put my trust in HIM, HE’ll take care of me. you don’t have to have power. and you don’t have to pretend that you do. all you have to do is trust in GOD who’s got all the power that you need. trust HIM.

more than you ask for…
take some time every day, a few minutes at the beginning to talk to GOD honestly. find some space to talk to HIM about the opportunities of the day, the feelings of the day, the relationships, the problems of the day.
in fact, let me get real practical about this. in your car. turn off the radio and the cell phone and stop putting on makeup or shaving. and just for five minutes talk to GOD. i’m not saying talk to GOD all the time you’re in the car. don’t make this so crazy you can’t do it. but just take five minutes. for many of us the only time we’re sure to be alone sometime during the day is somewhere driving in the car. so just turn everything off and take five minutes to say, “ok, GOD, let’s have an honest talk about how i’m feeling.” if you begin to do that as a daily habit it makes an incredible difference in your life.
when you talk to GOD in honest prayer let me just tell you, you will not always get what you ask for. GOD is much wiser than to give us everything that we ask for. you will often get much more than you ask for.
some of you are familiar with this soldier’s prayer from american history.
i asked GOD for strength that i might achieve,
i was made weak that i might learn humbly to obey.
i asked GOD for health that i might do greater things,
i was given infirmity that i might do better things.
i asked for riches that i might be happy,
i was given poverty that i might be wise.
i asked for power that i might have the praise of men,
i was given weakness that i might feel the need of GOD.
i asked for all things that i might enjoy life,
i was given life that i might enjoy all things.
i got nothing that i asked for, but everything that i’d hoped for.
almost despite myself my unspoken prayers were answered.
i am among all men most richly blessed.
when you don’t know what to do what do you do? start by making GOD’s love your lifeline. then you make the decision to make patience your priority. then you make prayer your pressure release.

statements of fear and insecurity…
fear and insecurity demand that i must always be in control. the more insecure i am the more i have to be in control. the opposite is true also. the more secure i am as a person, the less i need to be in control. i don’t need it. but if i'm insecure and if i'm fearful i'm going to try to grab for control, i must always have my own way. i must always have the last word. we’ve got to do it my way. i demand my rights. all of those statements are symbols of insecurity.
sin destroyed the perfect relationship and thus began the battle of the sexes. in genesis 3.16 (ber), GOD tells eve, you will be drawn to your husband yet he will dominate you.
that wasn’t GOD’s plan or idea. but that’s what happened when fear entered the relationship.
sadly GOD’s ideal was destroyed. instead of complementing each other, husbands and wives started competing with each other. GOD made women and men totally different for a purpose. we’re different in every genetic component of our bodies. our dna is different. we’re just different. we were meant to complement each other not to compete with each other.
the root problem in a lot of marriages i’ve seen is the power struggle between two very insecure people. and the issue is who’s going to be in control. there’s a constant battle and it’s revealing insecurity.
now if these are the fears that disconnect us what causes us to reconnect to those we love? the answer is honesty. because fear makes us dishonest. we hide our feeling. we hide our faults. we hide our fears. dishonesty of course destroys relationships.
1 john 1.7 (niv), if we live in the light as GOD is in the light, we can share fellowship with each other.
fellowship means a close relationship, a connection which comes from living in the light, living out in the open, being honest, being authentic, being truthful. and GOD is in the light because GOD is always honest. GOD cannot lie. GOD always tells the truth.
great relationships are built on trust. and you don't trust people who lie to you. you don’t trust people who don’t tell you the truth. so if you don’t tell the truth in your relationship there’s not going to be any trust. and if there’s not any trust you don’t have a relationship. you’re disconnected. so it starts with being honest.

decide to be honest...
yet in the book of james in the new testament in chapter 2, james reminds us that we have a tough time with our tongues sometimes. he says if anybody can speak perfectly all the time, they’re a perfect person. he said that our tongue is like a restless evil. it’s full of poison. later in the book he says, “out of this same mouth come blessings and cursings.” we’ve all faced that.
so the question is, how do i use these words to build people rather than tear people down?
counselor, gary chapman, said this about communication: “communication is basically an act of the will.” i’ve got to decide some things and JESUS shows us the way. what can i decide to do this week to build people with my words?
one thing i can do is i can decide to be honest.
proverbs 24.26 (ms), an honest answer is like a warm hug.
yet many of us relate more to this quote: “the secret of life is honesty in fair dealing. if you can fake that, you’ve got it made.” that’s not proverbs. that’s groucho marx. we relate to that, though. it’s tough to be honest sometimes.
but JESUS was honest in his communication. HE didn’t talk so much about honesty as HE practiced honesty. HE spoke with honesty in all of his relationships.
ephesians 4.15 (niv) in the new testament tells us how that honesty is balanced in our lives. speaking the truth in love. you balance truth and love. it takes both. you speak it in love.
there are some people who use truth like a missile. they don’t tell you the truth. they aim it at you. we’ve all discovered that. that’s not what this is talking about.
there are other people who are just thoughtless. that can also hurt people. they’re just thoughtless with what they say. they say things like, “you do well for your age.” or “i can’t believe you did such a good job!” was that a compliment?
